Southern Fukien, seeing that Chiu On was originally under the jurisdiction of Fukien and should not be governed by any neighbouring province, made repeated representations to the Authorities in Chiu Chow and Swatow, demanding its return. But our Authorities took no heed of him, and Cheung Ngai was filled with shame and anger. Now the Northern Expedition has been sent out, and Cheung desires to avail himself of the opportunity to recover Chiu On. He has sent successive detachments to Wan Shiu, Ping Wo and Ma Sang (the latter is at the frontier between Chiu On and Wan Shiu), made a

display of his war preparations and under menace of war, required Cheung Ching to leave Chiu On within certain days.

Cheung Ching has now, on the one hand, wired to Ho Ying Yuen

and asked for instructions and re-inforcements, and on the

other, has marched to the front with his men, and threatened

Wan Shiu and Ma Sang. According to information received on

the day before yesterday, a skirmish has been fought at

la Seng between the van-guards of the two sides. The

Fukienese made several fierce assaults on Chiu On which were

all repulsed Both sides are still holding out against

each other at la Sang, and no decisive victory was won by

either side. We understand that the Authorities in Chiu

Chow and Swatow are not paying much attention to this fighting for Cheung Ching has an army large enough to resist Cheung Ngai for the time being, and can be left to settle the matter himself. No re-inforcements will be sent unless the situa-

tion becomes critical, but every preparation is being made,

and re-inforcement can be sent out any time to help Cheung. This has caused much speculation. If the trouble at Chiu On continues the area involved is bound to spread until this spark has involved Kwong Tung in a war with Fukien.
